Social Media: The Effects of Using These Online Platforms
Today, many of us use social media on a daily basis, and many of us use multiple social media platforms during the day. But how do these various social media sites impact us emotional and otherwise? Social media sites of all kinds have social, emotional, political and cultural effects, but each site can vary in those effects. Sites such as Instagram can instill a desire to look a certain way or be perceived in a particular light because of the use of photographs (Joe, 2018). Since, most social media has shifted to focusing on images and video, more focus has been put on how things and people look. This can affect not only the way some perceives their self but also how they perceive other individuals or other groups of people. There of course can be positive impacts as well, such as the ability to connect with friends and family and meet people with similar interests as one's self (Joe, 2018).
Below is a video explaining the 10 most popular social media platforms:
Each social media platform offers its own positives and negatives. For example, some sites such as Snapchat and Instagram allow people to share their experiences via images but these platforms have loose sexual censorship (Joe, 2018). This means there is little to no regulation or monitoring of sexual imagery, which becomes an issue when parents have children using these platforms. There are several cultural impacts of social media. They set trends and can even break them. Social media can alter the tides of social progress and understanding which makes it an important tool for communicators when reaching their audience.
